Fifth gathering dedicated to Marija Juric Zagorka during 25th and 26th November. Cultural and Scientific Days of Marija Juric Zagorka revalue the work of the prominent Croatian journalist, publicist, advocate of women's and workers' rights.

One of the most charismatic writer of Croatian history Marija Juric Zagorka (1873rd to 1957th) attracts many fans of her character and work. This is the fifth gathering dedicated to Marija Juric Zagorka during 25th and 26th November

That feminism is a term that is often associated with her name, Cultural and Scientific Days of Marija Juric Zagorka revalue the work of the prominent Croatian journalist, publicist, advocate of women’s and workers’ rights.

If you want to familiarize yourself with the atmosphere in which she worked, and created the characters of his novels, visit her apartment which is open to the public. The apartment is located in the heart of Zagreb, at the market Dolac (Dolac 8), and all objects in it are genuine and are from the time when she lived there and worked. This space is now a museum. It stretches over about 120 square meters, and it is dominated by a large library with more than three thousand books of local and foreign authors, and a large number of journals devoted to women’s issues and gender equality. In addition to the library, in the apartment was preserved and a large desk and an old typewriter on which he wrote his most famous works – “Grička witch,” “Knight of the Slavonian plain,” “Daughter of Lotrščak” as well as many other books and articles. It is indeed a great oeuvre – from cheap and small volumes to luxury editions that show how over the decades and changed her position in society.

Days of Marija Juric Zagorka organized in collaboration of the Center for Women’s Studies, based in her home at the museum Dolcu and the Department of Comparative Literature, Faculty of Philosophy in Zagreb.

FORTRESSES AND CASTLES OF ZAGORJE

Entering Croatia from the North, you will find Hrvatsko Zagorje, which, because of the gentle and soft curves of its hills, is also known as “tame” Zagorje. There you will find some medieval and Renaissance fortresses and numerous Baroque castles connected by a dense network of roads, so that they can be seen on a romantic round-trip.

The most famous Renaissance fortress and palace, VELIKI TABOR, was built in the beginning of the 16th century for the noble Ratkaj family. The vast pentagonal tower in the center served as the living quarters (palas),and is encircled by an oval space enclosed by walls supporting arcade porches on two levels and by five strong semi-circular Renaissance towers accentuated with consoles at the top.

Here we present several Baroque castles from the Zagorje region in order to show each one’s individual character.

TRAKOSCAN, Trakoscan was built in the 13th c. within Croatia´s northwestern fortification system, as a rather small observation fortress for monitoring the road from Ptuj to Bednja Valley. It is located on a landscaped hill above the lake. This romantic castle attracts numerous tourists.

ZAJEZDA, a castle near Zlatar, is a good example of a three-winged Baroque castle. It was built in the styrian architectural style for the Patacic family in 1740. The arcades on columns on both the ground and upper levels open up the living quarters towards the courtyard. On the fourth side of the castle is a wall with a playful baroque entrance portal. The castle features a large central hall with intricately decorated vaults and a lovely family chapel. It is surrounded by an extensive garden, which is typical of most castles of the period.

BISTRA is also a three-winged Baroque castle with accentuated corner pieces. An oval projection standing at the center exceeds the rest of the castle. Within is a wide oval hall luxuriously equipped and decorated with marvellous frescoes.

MILJANA is a harmonious little castle that was built in the 17th century, though its most valuable assets are the 18th century Rococo frescoes by A. Lerchinger which grace the walls of the castle’s rooms. The paintings show landscapes and allegorical themes, such as the four elements and the four seasons, painted to illustrate the lives and customs of the highly developed nobility of the period. A good example is the fresco depicting a musician playing a horn and a group of aristocrats leisurely sitting on the grass and listening to the music.

In its second annual edition Nu:Write will again prominently feature theatres from the UK, while premiering the results of a co-operation with London-based theatre Box of Tricks, as well as offering a renewed run of this year’s success production of PLAYlist.

One of this year’s highly anticipated performers, Doctor Brown is coming to Croatia following a world tour with his internationally acclaimed hour-long one-man show called Becaves.

9th Zagreb Film Festival from 16th-23rd October 2011

CINEMA EUROPA, CINEMA TUŠKANAC, DOKUKINO CROATIA, DANCE CENTER, MUSEUM OF CONTEMPORARY ART

The nineth edition of the Zagreb Film Festival is going to be held from October 16th-23rd 2011. This year the programme is going to be shown on several locations in Zagreb – at the cinemas Europa, Tuškanac, andDokukino Croatia as well as the Dance Centre, which is going to function as a cinema for a week for the purposes of the festival. A part of the programme is going to be screened in the Museum of Contemporary Art (MSU) in Novi Zagreb. With its expansion over the banks of the river Sava, the Zagreb Film Festival is going to blend in with the city life more than ever and it is going to remain the biggest and most important film festival for the inhabitants of Zagreb. The festival is going to host about 90 films in seven different programmes!

The main programme (at the cinemas Europa, Tuškanac, and Dokukino Croatia) is, again, going to present new film debuts – there will be 12 feature films, 10 short films, and 15 documentaries. 34 films are going to compete for the festival’s award – the Golden Pram.

Checkers (at the Tuškanac Cinema) is a programme in which Croatian short films compete for the prize. Its aim is to promote and stimulate Croatian film-making.

Bib for Kids (at the Europa Cinema and MSU), for the fifth year in a row, is going to make the youngest audience satisfied by screening five films, five titles from the world’s cinematography, intended for children of different age. The aim of this programme is to familiarize children with films and encourage them to become cinemagoers.

My First Film (at the Dance Centre), a programme which is inspired by the homonymous book by Stephen Lowenstein, is celebrating its fifth edition this year. The programme is going to be focused on Danish directors, whose film debuts are going to be screened at the Dance Centre.

The Great 5 (at the Tuškanac Cinema and MSU) is a programme which includes movies from five important European cinematographies, and which has conquered the hearts of the Zagreb audience and become one of the most attended side programme. It presents new European films from Spain, France, Italy, Germany, and Great Britain + guest country Austria.

The program Sexual Education on Film – a selection by film critic Daniel Rafaelić – presents films made in various parts and social circumstances of the 20th century which tend to educate the audience about sexuality.

Red Westerns program presents the films of the specific Communist western genre made in Eastern Europe in the 1960s and 70s as a response to the decadent genre of American western. The latter program has been realized in cooperation with Ludmila Cvikova and Rotterdam Film Festival.

A minor part of the permanent collection includes artworks created during the first half of the twentieth century, the presence of which is crucial for the understanding of modern and contemporary art.
Museum History

The Zagreb Museum of Contemporary Art was founded in 1954 with the aim of following, documenting, and promoting events, styles, and phenomena in contemporary art. At first it was located in Kulmer Palace in the Upper Town, at St. Catherine’s Square no. 2. Since its very beginnings, its goal has been to assemble a relevant collection and to operate in accordance with modern principles of museology, catering to the needs of our times. In 2003, the construction of a new museum building, designed by architect Igor Franić, began.

The Croatian National Theatre in Zagreb (Croatian: Hrvatsko narodno kazalište u Zagrebu), commonly referred to as HNK Zagreb, is a theatre located in Zagreb, owned and operated by the Ministry of Culture. The theatre evolved out of the first city theatre built in 1836 housed in the present-day Old City Hall. The theatre was first established as the Croatian National Theatre in 1860, and in 1861 it gained government support putting it on par with many other European national theatres. In 1870 an opera company was added to the theatre and in 1895 it moved to the new purpose-built building on Marshal Tito Square in Zagreb’s Lower Town, where it is based today.
