10.11.2011.
In its second annual edition Nu:Write will again prominently feature theatres from the UK, while premiering the results of a co-operation with London-based theatre Box of Tricks, as well as offering a renewed run of this year’s success production of PLAYlist.
One of this year’s highly anticipated performers, Doctor Brown is coming to Croatia following a world tour with his internationally acclaimed hour-long one-man show called Becaves. Dr Brown is the stage persona of Philip Burgers, a London-based performer/visual comedy absurdist and surrealist/clown/idiot originally from California, who trained for two years with French Clown Master Philippe Gaulier. His show will provoke, repulse and excite you, make you laugh, or cry… with laughter!
Seamlessly synchronizing live music, performance and storytelling with stunning films and animation — this is the wickedly twisted new tale from the multiple award-winning company behind Malthouse Theatre’s 2008 sensation Between the Devil and the Deep Blue Sea. After a premiere season at Sydney Opera House and before a run at the London National Theatre, 1927 Theatre tour their newest work, an even more enigmatic tale of dubious characters inhabiting a dystopian metropolis of inner city paranoia. Between Tim Burton and Charles Dickens, Fritz Lang’s Metropolis, silent films and 21st century comic books, The Animals and Children Took to the Streets is a visually stunning darkly subversive parable of climbing the social ladder, the revolution and how it eats its children.
Tristan Bates Theatre, dubbed the “thorn in the side of the West End”, regularly produces critically acclaimed productions, and once a month does a “Midnight Matinee”. Besides touring the Midnight Matinees throughout the UK, including sell-out shows at the Edinburgh Fringe Festival 2010, they’ve brought in to Nu:Write Theatre Festival 2010 and showed Zagreb an amazing time. Returning to do yet another spellbinding, sleep-defying Nu:Write closing night event, they will be occupying multiple spaces with a host of the finest performers, musicians and mischief-makers, with hidden surprises and unplanned adventures.
Dubbed the next generation of new writing, Box of Tricks is a company committed to developing and producing the best new work around; discovering, nurturing and promoting the next generation of playwrights. Box of Tricks and Nu:Write join forces to stage Tales of Two Cities: a transnational theatrical adventure in six parts. The Anglo-Croat company present six 15-minute monologues inspired by place: three London plays in English, three Zagreb plays in Croatian. Celebrating these two great capital cities, this is theatre without boundaries: a cross-cultural, bilingual collaboration that unites the very best of both worlds.
Eight short plays inspired by Balkan New Wave songs put together into a theatrical PLAYlist – sounds hard to envision, but this was exactly what both new and established Croatian playwrights had to do. Their task was to pick their favourite song by a New Wave band from the region and write a short play no longer in duration than the song it was inspired by. The sold out production was created in five days of intense work in March 2011 and is now returning to Teatar &td in its new and improved run.
PLAYlist will be visually supported by an exibition by Belgrade photographer Zorica Bajin Đukanović, portraying ex-Yugo rock music protagonists of the 1970s and ’80s.
The theatrical events at Teatar &td stages will be accompanied by our educational workshops – held by 1927 and Philip Burgers – as well as after parties with DJs at the Teatar &td Café bar every evening after the last show of the day.
