The Theatre Night Project (expanded title: Multicultural European Theatre Night) began at the incentive of Eleonora Rossi. It was realized as a pilot programme on 25 October 2008 at the Public University Dubrava – Children’s Theatre Dubrava in Zagreb and at the Šibenik Theatre.
In 2009, under the sponsorship of the Ministry of Culture of the Republic of Croatia, Theatre Night grew into a national event that includes nearly all of the major theatres in Croatia.
This one-day event is dedicated to theatre and the performing arts. It is held simultaneously every year in November in many Croatian cities. The ultimate goal of the event is to bring together theatres in Croatia and Europe and to transform it into a traditional event on the European continent.
Events dedicated to culture are a recent practice in both European and Croatian cultural policy and have a stimulating effect on the establishment of international and national cooperation in such projects. They also contribute to a greater connection between contemporary artistic form and the public and to the attractiveness of the tourist offer of the participating city. To date, no event at a European level (for example, the Night of Museums) dedicated to the dramatic arts has been staged, although there are many events dedicated to other artistic forms which attract the attention of both cultural institutions and the European public.
On selected Saturdays in the month of November theatre will be at the forefront of meetings, discussion, socialising and new understandings in European cities. This will be achieved through the original form of the events and other rich content: international co-productions of theatre performances, readings and the staging of texts of contemporary European authors, multilingualism, roundtables and direct feeds to Internet gatherings. It will be accompanied by music, play centres and workshops for young children, and a gastronomy offer, while expanding awareness about mutual connectivity through participation in this unique event. It will also be possible to follow simultaneous events in other parts of Europe through the Internet and live television feeds and reporting.
